18 - Vintage Skis - $250 Value
Paris Manufacturing wooden skis. Never been mounted. These skis are from Gallagher’s Sports Shop in Portsmouth, NH and were contributed to this auction by the Morton Family.
The Paris “Olympic” model is laminated hickory from the early 1950’s. There was a common phrase then, skiers slid down the mountain, “On Wings of Hickory”. In the 1950’s the best skis were made out of Hickory as it reduced vibration better than other woods such as maple of birch. These “Wings of Hickory” provided smooth swooping turns down the mountain.
These skis are brand new, never been mounted and are 7 feet long. This is before base material like P-Tex was commonly used. These wood bases are bright red. They have been covered with Glazite, a lacquer that would last a full season.
